George H Ross

M, #4172, b. 15 January 1912, d. 1982
George H Ross was born on 15 January 1912.1 He married Clarice Nellie Featherstone, daughter of Walter Featherstone and Nellie Wood, on 18 June 1938 at Queens Road Church, Wimbledon, Surrey, EnglandG; C.N.F.-G.H.R.-JunE 18th, 1938.
To-day was a happy day for Clarice and George, and many friends and relations were present at the Church to see these two joined in holy matrimony.
The bride looked charming in a regal gown of silver brocaded satin, and carried a bouquet of white carnations and lilies of, the valley. She was attended by two small bridesmaids and two pages, all relations of the bride, by name June, Denise, Brian and Michael. The little girls wore peach coloured satin frocks with silver sashes and carried silver baskets of peach carnations. The boys wore period, suits of pale green satin. After the ceremony more than fifty guests adjourned to Queen's Hall.
Mr. G. C. Wood, the bride's grandfather, Proposed the health of the bride and bridegroom, and the toast was replied, to by George in a few well chosen words. Mr. Voysey, who had officiated at the ceremony then proposed the health of the bridal attendants, and this was replied to by the best man Mr. HL. Page, who said that as brevity was the order of the day he would just say thank you on their behalf. The happy pair left amid a shower of confetti and good wishes, for Cumberland. Clarice had changed into a sage green three piece suit, and was taking with her a musquash swagger coat, present from the bridegroom.
Good luck from the Fellowship. G.D.B.M.

Effects £659 3s. 4d.18 Henry Aaron Featherstone we have a contact for this family D Hello Paul,
Re Henry Aaron Featherstone ID I0016 on http:/www.worldconnect.rootsweb.com
I am new to the research of genealogy but I have just discovered your marvellous database of the Featherstone's and felt you may wish to hear of the now Barnes/Schmotz connection?
Henry Aaron was my great grandfather. He ended up as a gamekeeper at Morton Hall, Swinderby in Lincolnshire, he had 10 children. I notice you've only got the three eldest, he also had Walter, Charles, Mary, France, May, Maurice and Dorothy. My grandfather John, 2nd eldest was born in 1899 and had two daughters, Sylvia and Joyce.
I am Joyce's daughter and now live in Australia.
Is this what you need to add to your database? What other info can I provide that may help? Unfortunately the family name of Featherstone ended with my mother, Joyce Barnes and her sister Sylvia Lakin both of whom met and married in Beeston Notts, but their cousins have family connections with male lines in Wales, Kenilworth, London and Skegness of all places!
I can provide further information on these lines if indeed this is what you need?
This is a work email and I'm only here two days per week, (Thursday and Friday) but my home contact details are:
schmotz@powerup.com.au
Let me know if this is of assistance. I must say your database is fantastic. It was literally the first real search I've done since only taking this hobby up a month ago so your information is a goldmine! Well done and thanks! Regards Sue Schmotz 25 May 2006 Sue.Schmotz@det.qld.gov.auen's (Bothey?) hard to decifer

I have recently started tracing my family tree, mainly in Scotland but have changed to the English side now. Having seen your family tree I was over the moon when I saw the names John Featherstone and Alice Duffin who were my Great Grandparents. John Angus 1/6/2000 JAngus2674@aol.com

I apologise for not contacting you sooner but life has been rather hectic since my return from the states. I have not been able to do any more research on my family. Also, although the names are the same in your family tree I am not so sure that mine are the same people. I will give you what little information I have on the Featherstone side of my family, it is very little because I have been concentrating on my fathers side.

Grandfather: Harold Robert Featherstone
Born: 31 December 1899
Place: Wimbledon, Surrey (I have the address but it is in the states)
Father: John Featherstone
Mother: Alice Duffin

Grandmother: Ella Alexandra Smalley
Born: 13 January 1901
Place: Essex
Father: William Byron Smalley
Mother: Harriett Beatrice Elliston

As I said it is only a small amount of info but I would be interested to know if your John and Alice are
the same as mine. I look forward to hearing from you. John JAngus2674@aol.com 24/08/2000

from Malcolm Ross ross@aaa.net.au I wonder whether John Lawrence Featherstone's illegitimate origins have anything to do with the silence. Ah, I've just found some notes from years ago, made after a conversation with Mum, in which she said that John Lawrence started his own nursery in Putney, and his son John became Chief Postmaster at Wimbledon.

She married James CREW, a widower in Bagshot, Surrey on 18th December 1901 and died in Luton, Beds on 8th May 1954.

From talking to an elderly aunt, I believe that she had older brothers called Jack, George, Walter, Charlie, Henry and possibly one other. I've looked in the Bagshot census and found her and Henry, both born in Putney -and their parents, John Lawrence and Mary Ann who were born in Kent. From the Kent IGI, I've found that John Lawrence Featherstone and Mary Ann Martin were married on 17th October 1859 -and that their son George was baptised on 13th October 1860. I'm afraid that is as far as I've got. Most of my family comes from Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire, so I've never found the time to pursue this line in Kent. However, I'd be interested to know if this yet fits in with anything you have, or whether I need to find out more first. I look forward to hearing from you, Paul Clayson P.F.Clayson@rl.ac.uk

Thanks for all the info. Most of my info has come from my father-in-law who has an amazing memory at the age of 91. I phoned him this morning to tell him of your email and he was so chuffed - he loves all the family tree stuff. When I first starting researching the Cooper side he was amazed as he could only remember his mother Sophia Louisa Cooper as having sisters Frances, Maus and Ethel and brother Albert. It turns out from the 1881 census that Frances and Sophia were from a family of 11 children! Sophia died at the age of 45 from bronchitis and my father-in-law was only 8 at the timely was right as he said John (who he always knew as Jack) was the gym instructor. He was also telling me that even the girls Olive and Ivy went to Royal Marine School. I do have a picture of Ivy (in a ballet dress) and one which I think is Olive in my possession. If you want copies please just ask and I'll gladly email. He remembers that Olive married Jimmy Fletcher, also in the marines and had a daughter he thinks called Virginia. He thinks they lived somewhere near Clevedon and had a shop selling seeds and garden stuff? He remembers Ivy having a daughter called Barbara who possibly was an interpreter, married a Dutch naval officer and lived in Belgium?
Also when I read your notes I was surprised at the 1901 census results. It stated Arthur Charles as being a private in the R.N.L.I. I was thinking he was in the Lifeboat Institution. Before I even mentioned it to my father-in-law he told me that in those days the Marines were known as R.M.L.I. (Royal Marines Light Infantry) so maybe there was a spelling error?
He vividly remembers Horace, Bert and Jack and says they were all 6 footers! The last time he saw Jack was during the war years outside his wifes family bakery by the dockyard in Plymouth.
Thanks again for replying so quickly. It's sad to know that at my father-in-laws age time is running out and I am trying hard to gather information on his side so that he can share it. I wish I had done it before I lost my own Dad as he too would have been so interested. I never asked the questions I should have while my Dad was here so I've made sure I asked my Mum and my husbands Dad before its too late.
Don't forget if you want the photos just ask.

I wonder if your Horace Featherstone is the same as my Horace Featherstone? I thought my Grandad was born in 1896, but I guess it could have been 1897. And East Stonehouse also appears to be Plymouth, where he was born! He was a policeman in London and lived in the Archway, and then Enfield, and had three sons.

Kind regards,

Lynda Featherstone lynda@xbbc.fsnet.co.uk 2 March 2004

Yes they are one and the same Horace Charles Featherstone. My cousin Clive spoke to his dad, Roy, who said that indeed, Horace's parents were Arthur & Frances, Arthur being in the Marines. Horace himself was also in the Marines (or Navy?) as a lad.

Horace had 4 or 5 brothers and sisters apparently - there were twins, Bert and Olive: then there was Ivy and one other - a male. Could have been the John you have notes on. One of them became a gym instructor at Eton.

I am only familiar with the more contemporary members of my Featherstone tree, if that is of any interest?

Oo yes please I'd like to see front page of the family Bible. What is the family Bible? Mum & Dad used to have the Burkes Peerage book of Featherstones, I remember.

This is a work email and I'm only here two days per week, (Thursday and Friday) but my home contact details are: e-mail address Let me know if this is of assistance. I must say your database is fantastic. It was literally the first real search I've done since only taking this hobby up a month ago so your information is a goldmine! Well done and thanks! Regards Sue Schmotz 25 May 2006.

Alice Duffin was born in 1871 at Chobham, Surrey, EnglandG; in 1927 voters list of Wimbledon there is a Joseph and Emily Dorcas DUFFIN living at 126 Haydon Park Road, in the 1914 list of members of QRBC there is J Duffin listed at this address, became a member in 1901. May be no relation at all.

I think this family is more likely - especially as by 1891 John Laurence Featherstone was living in nearby Bagshot. Is that how they met?

WO97/1149/67 - transcription of the document at Kew:
Discharge of Thomas Featherstone Corps of Royal Sappers and Miners

The board report that Private Thomas Featherstone, by trade a shoemaker of Bromley, Kent and was attested for the Royal Regiment of Sappers and miners at Woolwich in the County of Kent on the 13th January 1846 at the age of 20 years and 1 month that after making every deduction required by Her Majesty's Regulations, the Service up to the 12th day of October 1852 which he is entitled to reckon, amounts to 6 years, 273 days, as shewn by the detailed statement on the second page; during which period he served abroad two and 4/12 year's , viz. at Gibraltar 5 months Halifax NS one year 11 months.

His discharge is proposed in consequence of epileptic fits.

With regard to the character and conduct of Private Thomas Featherstone the board have to report that upon reference to the Defaulter's Book, and by the Parole testimony he has been given, it appears that he has never been tried by a Court Martial - that he became entitled to one penny per diem good conduct pay and one distinguishing mark for good conduct on the 19th May 1852 of which he has since been uninterruptedly in possession - and that his general character is very good.

    Period of Service
Royal Sappers and Miners Rank - Private - from 13th January 1846 to 12 October 1852 6 years 273 days.

    Medical Report
In 1847 when employed at Sandhurst instructing the Cadets in field works he had two fits. In October 1850, at Gibraltar immediately after running some distance to his barracks to get in by roll bell he suffered a fit of an epileptic nature followed by two others, for which he was invalided home.
