    Featherstonhaugh Buddy
    b. Rupert Edward Lee Featherstonhaugh, 4 October 1909, Paris, France, d. 12 July 1976, London, England. Raised and educated in England, Featherstonhaugh played clarinet and tenor saxophone with dance bands from the late 20s. In the early 30s he worked with Spike Hughes and was a member of the band formed to back Louis Armstrong for his 1932 UK tour. Later in the decade, Featherstonhaugh recorded with his own bands and also with Valaida Snow and Benny Carter. During service with the Royal Air Force in World War II, he played in service bands. In the summer of 1943 he followed Harry Parry into the broadcasting slot on the BBC’s popular Radio Rhythm Club. From the late 40s until the middle of the next decade, Featherstonhaugh drifted from view but in the mid-50s led a bop group, now playing baritone saxophone. Up-and-coming jazz artists in this band included Bobby Wellins and Kenny Wheeler. The bop group was short-lived, however, and in 1957 Featherstonhaugh retired from active playing. On tenor he showed the influence of Coleman Hawkins while on clarinet he hinted at a liking for the Chicago-style players.

Buddy Featherstonhaugh & The Radio Rhythm Club Sextet - RAF Bomb
Shortly after British Prime Minster Neville Chamberlain announced to the national that England was at war with Germany, numourous musicians found themselves in the Armed services deleting many of the country's bands and even forcing some to break up completely. However, out of this musical carnage many new and instrumentally innovative groups were formed within the services, such as the Buddy Feathernstonhaugh Quintet and its front line of trombone and tenor sax doubling clarinet.
With Vic Lewis on guitar and vocals, the band officially became His Majesty's Royal Air Force Bomber Command Sextet. They secured a few BBC broadcasts, began recording for ENSA and in June 1943, commenced a series of commercial recordings for EMI the bulk of which are included here.
