Mrs. Howard Paul (1877-78)

[Born Dartford, Kent c.1833, died London 6 Jun 1879]

Mrs. Howard Paul was born Isabelle Hill. Using the stage name "Miss Featherstone," she made her stage debut in 1853 as the Strand as Tom Tug in Charles Dibdin's ballad opera The Waterman. She frequently played Captain Macheath in Gay's The Beggar's Opera, in which, according to The New York Times "as her voice was adapted to the music in the tenor register, and her acting was at once droll and vivacious, she made the character highly entertaining, and restored popularity to the time-worn work."

She appeared in The Beggar's Opera at the Strand Theatre, London in 1853, and again in a revival at the Haymarket the following year. It was about this time that she married Howard Paul, a journalist whose comic magazine Diogenes, a would-be rival to Punch, failed shortly after its creation. The Howard Pauls then appeared together in a farce of his authorship, My Neighbor Opposite, and a comic duologue, Locked Out. It was highly successful and they produced it throughout England. Through most of the 1860s they appeared together in his varied "entertainments," visiting America a number of times in the process.

Mrs. Paul appeared many times apart from her husband, notably as Lady Macbeth at Drury Lane (1869), in the title role in a version of The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein (on a number of occasions in the early 1870s), and as Mistigris in Babil and Bijou at Covent Garden (1872-73).

In November 1877 she was engaged by Richard D'Oyly Carte to create the part of Lady Sangazure in the first production of The Sorcerer at the Opera Comique. She played it with much success for the entire run, ending in May 1878. It was originally intended that Mrs. Paul would take the part of Hebe in the next opera, H.M.S. Pinafore, but her health would not permit it. Gilbert and Sullivann then reduced the part dramatically and gave it to relative newcomer Jessie Bond.

Mrs. Howard Paul died suddenly at her residence in London on June 6, 1879. She was just 46 years old.

I found this on the free access this weekend only to the Oxford DNB database. I hope someone can "claim" her.

Jean

Paul [formerly Featherstone], Isabella [known as Mrs Howard Paul] (1833?-1879), actress and singer, was born at Dartford, Kent; nothing is known of her early life. She made her first appearance on the London stage at the Strand in March 1853, under the name Isabella Featherstone, as Captain Macheath in The Beggar's Opera. With her great vivacity and spirit, distinct vocal gifts, and considerable stage talent, she made an immediate mark, and was engaged at Drury Lane and subsequently at the Haymarket, where she played Macheath on 24 April 1854. In that year she also acted in Howard Paul's Locked out. She married Paul (1830–1905) in 1857, and the following year she took part with him in Patchwork, described as ‘a clatter of fun, frolic, song, and impersonation’. On 3 July 1858 she was Sir Launcelot de Lake in The Lancashire Witches, or, The Knight and the Giants, a burlesque included in an entertainment with which George Webster opened the Lyceum. In entertainments given by herself and her husband in London and the provinces in 1860 and successive years, Mrs Paul's share consisted largely of imitations of Henry Russell, Sims Reeves, and other well-known singers, in which she was very successful. On 2 September 1867 she was at the Strand playing Mrs Dove in her husband's Ripples on the Lake.

Mrs Paul's most ambitious appearance was at Drury Lane in February 1869, as Lady Macbeth to the Macbeth of Samuel Phelps and Charles Dillon on alternate nights. Foreshadowing later actresses, she softened the character of Lady Macbeth, making conjugal love her dominant trait. With this performance, which was not lacking in intensity, she doubled that of Hecate. She was also seen in Paris in comic opera. On 29 August 1872 she played Mistigris in Boucicault's Babil and Bijou, with music by Hervé and Frederick Clay, at Covent Garden. At the Olympic she appeared in The Grand Duchess, and she took a company of her own round the provinces, playing a species of drawing-room entertainment. In November 1877 she appeared at the Opera Comique as Lady Sangazure in Gilbert and Sullivann's The Sorcerer. This proved to be her last London engagement. While performing at Sheffield in The Crisis in 1879 she was taken ill suddenly; she was taken home to London, and on 6 June 1879 died at her residence, 17 The Avenue, Bedford Park, Turnham Green. She was buried at Brompton cemetery. Isabella Paul was a woman of ability whose talents were often frittered away in parts and occupations unworthy of them.
