     Y. Kent Database; Y. As of 1769, Mary Aylard was also known as Mary Aylward. As of 22 June 1795,her married name was Feverstone. She we have a contact for this family D My other offering, following another trip to the Maidstone archives, is the thought that the Mary Featherstone ( I0995) buried in Brenchley in 1818, aged 48, should be Mary (nee Aylard) wife of George. They married at Pembury in 1795 and, after their first children were seemingly Ticehurst born, their fourth was christened in Brenchley in 1802. The Kentish Gazette Pork Pie story of 1821 refers to the "house of the father of the prisoners where they all lodged" so he, at least, was still alive and in or about the village. I pored over the Brenchley archive hoping to find a likely candidate for the entry for his death/burial. I had no success there, but I could see no other Marys, so I hope you'll consider that she was the right age to be George's wife. (Mary Aylard = I1058 and George Feverstone/ Featherstone =I2462 ) Regards, Richard Huggett richardwh@tiscali.co.uk 20 September 2006

Hello Paul, I haven't made much progress with my Brenchley Featherstone researches lately, but I can offer a solution to the identity of Mary Aylard ( I0994 ) who married George Feverstone at Pembury in 1795. Finding no other Aylards in the Pembury parish records, I began looking in the neighbouring parishes. The parish registers and churchyard memorials at Lamberhurst showed some cases where Aylard was a variant spelling of Aylward, which lead me to the Aylward family of Ticehurst. Sure enough, among the children of John Aylward and Elizabeth Kadwell, I found Mary Aylward, christened at Ticehurst on 27/08/1769. That tallies with the Brenchley burial record of her age being 48 at her death in 1818. The Ticehurst connection may explain why the first three children of the marriage were christened at Ticehurst. I could find no other records of that Mary marrying or dying, so I hope you'll agree with my identification.

Thanks again Paul as you will note from my website William Hills after the death of his wife Ann Featherstone[if correct]had 3 children by his house keeper Jane Enderson who was a Whiffen of Farningham. The plot grows thicker do you have a contact for this person of Whiffen interest. Regards Peter

Who was the William Hills who married Ann Featherstone 19 October 1799 Stansted witnesses Robert and Margaret Hills. Up to the present we have recorded this William as the son of Henry Hills and Olivia Sharp but recent evidence in the form of Wills has produced a stronger candidate in the form of William Hills the base born son of Henry Hill's sister Martha. We have the following Stansted Monumental Inscription
To
the memory of
William Hills
who died November 19th 1836
aged 69 years
also Ann wife of the above
who died May 20th 1824
aged 51 years
left issue: two sons and one daughter
viz:Thomas Harriot and William
This clearly points to William being born ca 1767
William son of Henry and Olivia was bpt Stansted 14th Aug 1774 they were married 24th May 1774 Stansted. Whilst we do not have a birth/bpt for William son of Martha his Grandmother Martha Hill's Will states he was born before his mother's marriage 14th Nov1768 Stansted to James Simmons. Martha Hill's Will makes her son Thomas "guardian" of William natural son of her daughter Martha he in turn in his Will 1802 makes his nephew William, son of Martha Residuary legatee so in Mrs Bamping's view "he might well have received a decent amount of money. He sounds as though he was a much respected member of the family." Furthermore the William Hills who married Ann Featherstone acquired Richardsons Farm, West Kingsdown in 1805 which would fit with the arrival of his inheritance. William's two eldest children Thomas and Harriet preceded his marriage Ann F , also he recognised in his own Will dated 1 December 1834 proved 15 Feb1837 his 3 children born to his housekeeper Jane Longhurst. This would be in character for a man born out of wedlock but very much loved and respected within his family but without much respect for the Church and it's conventions. It might also be significant that he named his eldest child by his wife, Thomas, perhaps after his Uncle Thomas his guardian and benefactor and his eldest child by Jane,Martha perhaps after his mother and grandmother. Mrs Bamping in her letter dated 28 July 2003 states "I am inclined to agree that our William who married Ann F. was quite likely to have been Martha's son - you may remember I was worried that the MI at Stansted suggests he was born about 1767 and that would fit in with Marth's marriage in November 1768."
