An Old Friend
Mereworth village is about half a mile beyond this; and then turning up a lane on the right about a quarter of a mile farther, I reached the Queen’s Head Inn, kept by Mr. William Featherstone, elder brother of John Featherstone, before mentioned. William, when a schoolboy, was big and strong beyond the average, and was always looked upon as the captain of Wateringbury School; and his influence was always sought, and cheerfully given, in settling any dispute among the boys. He is now the village carpenter and builder as well as fruit grower, and host of the Queen’s Head Inn. Time had laid his hand gently upon him, but he is now a patriarchal looking man with a long white beard. He is fast approaching three score years and ten, and is still a fine fellow, fully six feet in height, though from his occupation slightly stooped.
I need not say I received a hearty welcome from himself and his kind partner, and they at once made me at home for the night: but it was getting on well towards morning when we retired to rest.

To My Old Schoolfellow
William Featherstone, of Mereworth, Kent.
at whose house I rested for the night, after spending the day amid the haunts and scenes of our boyhood at Wateringbury, just fifty years after leaving "The Old Home."
Though in Life's changeful journey we have friends, and friends, and friends-
Some who are passing pleasant, but whose friendship quickly ends
Some who were true and tried for years, whom Death has since laid low-
But few remain of these we cherished fifty years ago.
I've visited again to-day the school-ground where we played
With tops and marbles, till the bell stopped short the noise we made I've heard the children's voices, and my heart leaped in me so,
For the singing sounded just as ours did fifty years ago.
I've stood within the dear old Church where we, so many times,
Have, in the belfry, taken part in Sunday morning chimes
Have sat again beside the organ, in the second row,
Where we as choir boys used to sit just fifty years ago.
I've paced again the churchyard where our loving parents lie,
And memory stirred within me as I thought of days gone by;
And read the names upon the stones of those we used to know,
And many a chum and playmate, too, of fifty years ago.
Ah! they are but a memory now, and Time on us has laid
His finger, but so gently that the whitening locks have made
The only sign of autumn, when the lengthening shadows grow,
And tell us winter's nearer now than fifty years ago.
Well, we've had many mercies, friend, along Life's chequered way,
And 'tis with pleasure undisguised I grasp your hand to-day;
And may we ever, till our world-tired hearts and heads lie low,
Still own at least one friend we treasured, fifty years ago.
George Newman, Lloegryn.

Letters of Appraisal
As the proof of how the inhabitants of a parish change during half a century, I extract the following from a letter received from my old friend and schoolfellow, Wm. Featherstone, now of Mereworth: "I should never have thought that fifty years would have made the
difference that it has done; but I assure you I scarcely find anyone living now that we went to school with. I spent an evening at the King’s Head, Wateringbury, a few nights since, and I seemed to be fifty miles away, as I scarcely knew anyone there.
"The Harris family are the only people in Wateringbury that I knew in those days. The Perrins, Holders, Cripps, Sharps, Ongleys, and many others who were there are all gone. Our old friend, Dick Cripps, is at Malling, but I scarcely ever see him; and his brother, George, is, I believe, still alive.
"I almost forgot to mention that the morning I received your letter was the fifty-fifth anniversary of my going to carpentering at Mr. Perrins." in 2001.18

Ann Walker was baptised 08/08/1830 at Brenchley, daughter of James Walker & Mary Walker nee Roots. The Elizabeth Featherstone shown on the 1861 census is definitely Ann's daughter Ann Elizabeth born Tonbridge Union in 1851 in August (hence she would be 9 on 1861 census). No father given and she is shown as Ann Walker in 1871 and marries as Ann Elizabeth Walker. My father remembers Ann Elizabeth and says she was an old witch who flicked a cat o'nine tails at the children when they passed her house. She was his grandmother! His father ran away and joined the army to get away from her. I have contacted David Martin. The email address you gave dmart@blueyonder.co.uk was bounced. So I tried dmartin instead and so far it's not come back. Madeleine
