Elizabeth Phoebe Featherstone was witness to the marriage of Alexander Bentley Gordon and Matilda Hill at Minster in Sheppey 4 February 1861.

Phoebe Eliza Gordon is on my family tree. She married George William Plumpton on 9 September 1851 as Eliza Gordon at St Johns, Waterloo. Intriguingly, she appears to have previously married James Woolner (sp?) on 2 December 1850 as Eliza Gordon at Sheppey. I believe it is the same person because I note on both she names her father as James Gordon, solicitor or lawyer and on the birth certificate of Harriet in 1856 she states her previous names as Wolner (sic), formerly Gordon. On the 1858 marriage certificate to Edward Featherstone she calls herself Phoebe Plumpton. I would like to know if you have any idea why she used the name 'Brown' as a middle name for her first son. As far as I know 'Brown' isn't a surname in the Gordon family. I can see that you have done a lot of research and I wonder if you know anything else about the Gordon family? Cheers, Karen 17 August 2009

Dear Paul, Francis Featherstone was born c.1841 at Rotherhithe and was married to Mary Ann ? who was born c. 1837. Their 4 issue - William b.c. 1867, George b.c. 1869 Alfred b.c. 1872 and Ernest, August 1880. All born Rotherhithe and Francis was a gardener at time George's marriage. This from the 1881 when George and sibs and parents lived at 7 Canute Street, Rotherhithe and at his marriage he was a bricklayer and on the 1901 he was a dock labourer. son George b. 1896 in Bermondsey but brother Ernest b. 1900 at Rotherhithe. I used to live at Bellingham and my father had an oil shop there and when I had leave I would help him. I remember in 1956 just on the Catford side of Lewisham Hospital was a shop which sold sheeting material - ground sheets etc. My father took me into the shop which was owned (possibly managed) by a man named Featherstone. They had a chat and my father failed to introduce me and after he told me that the man was his cousin. I thought he was kidding and it took me over 40 years to discover that connection through his mother's sister Alice.

FUNERAL OF ONE OF THE OLDEST ROTHERHITHIANS
The death has occured of one of Rotherhithe's oldest inhabitants, Frank Featherstone, of 6 Canute Street, who had attained his ninetieth year; and his funeral took place at Nunhead on Wednesday of last week.
Mr.Featherstone was a remarkable man, physically and mentally, for his age, and until three days before his death he was apparently in his normal health.
The deceased had been pensioned by the L.C.C. for about twenty years. For a long period he was employed at Southwark Park to tend the water fowl and other birds, including pigeons, pheasants and guinea fowl, which sported in large numbers in the lake or about its islands before boating was introduced there. Feeding time for these birds was one of the "sights" of the park. At that period, Mr Featherstone used to relate, some of the park keepers wore uniform resembling that of the modern police constable.
A native of Rotherhithe, Mr Featherstone took an intelligent interest in the affairs of the Borough, and was actively associated with the Labour Protection League - of which he was one of the oldest members - and the Liberal Association. He also helped in promoting the erection of the memorial near Crystal Bridge to the late Father Thomas, of St. Katherine's, Rotherhithe.
Mr. Featherstone, whose wife predeceased him a good many years is survived by three sons, who wish, through us, to thank friends and neighbours for flowers and sympathetic messages on the occasion of their father's burial.

Hi Paul

Yes, that is the correct Jane Featherstone. I would really appreciate any information you may have about Jane and her relations. I have only just started with Jane, she is the wife of my great grand uncle, and I have no information about her at all and any assistance you may be able to give me would be much appreciated.

Best regards

Hi Paul, My Grandad was Alfred Havelock Featherstone born in 1875 of Charles Cloke and Jane, if you would like further details please contact me. Val Turner val-t@tiscali.co.uk 3 May 2004

Hi Paul, I don't know much but here goes, my mum never met any of her fathers relations, she says that her father (Alfred Havelock) had a family argument and moved from Kent to Hayes Middlesex where he worked for H.M.V., he was lodging with Annie Browning a widow, they then married on the 23rd August 1914, (I have the certificate) he was 39 she was 37 they had 2 children, Charles ? and Annie Josephine Mary (my mum)not sure when Charles was born but my mum says he was older then her by a couple of years, (he died about 5 years ago, they were not close!) my mum was born on 5/4/1918 and glad to say she is still with us, she said that after the war my grandparents went to Deptford to find the family but the houses had been flattened, my parents married on 23/12/1939 and I am the fourth of five, my dad has died but all the rest are alive and well. Not sure when my grandad died, possibly 1957, I can't remember him so I must have been quite young and I was born in 1955. Are we related at all? if you need anymore let know. Val 4 May 2004. My father, Martin William, and his brother, Arthur George, were born in Lambeth- in 1892 and 1894 respectively. Their father, John George Martin, was born in West Malling, Kent, worked in London as a cabinet maker, and married Annie Elizabeth Spriggs. Later they moved to East Peckham, Kent, and owned a hotel, The Rose and Crown.
Does this ring any bells? Mary
Paul, At last, after several searches, and finding most Featherstones appeared to come from the North of England, here is my Grandfather! His son, Martin William, was my father and I was born in Dover. Now living in British Columbia, married to a Canadian, I get to England whenever I can. Where are you? Mary Tarves p.s. my family tree has not started yet, but I may have info.

Hi Paul, Related or not, I am very glad to meet you and your family. What a feat, tracing all the Featherstones. I would love to have been on that tour up to Hexham. A long time ago my father and I went to Wateringbury and met some Featherstones. They had a daughter who also had emigrated to Canada. We came to a standstill with our half-hearted research at the local church. I have a Pembroke table under which someone wrote in pencil "Mr. Featherstone, Wateringbury". My father said the Wateringbury man had the Featherstone eyes! But there was apparently no known link with East Peckham. Is it possible that you could let me have a copy of our branch? If there is expense involved, I would be please to reimburse. To my annoyance, I cannot print your e-mail; I just get a heading without content. Must be doing something wrong. My father said he had heard some of our ancestors were smugglers. But, it seems that this was a popular occupation on the south coast at some point. Some of my relatives used to live in Morden, but they were Spriggs. Ernest Spriggs was the youngest brother of Annie Elizabeth who married John George Martin. I will try to find Offam and Birling on the map. Kent, I think? I find this most interesting and am very grateful to you for responding, Paul. I have photos of my Great Grandfather Featherstone. Regards, Mary positivemove@shaw.ca.
