Mary Ann Featherstone we have a contact for this family D From: david@fisherd93.freeserve.co.uk 3 February 2003
Frederick Fisher and Mary Ann Fisher (Featherstone) cannot be found on the 1881 census. I've looked many times. I wonder if they were between houses in this poor part of London - I get the feeling it's unusual but not unique when I've talked to people at the Tower Hamlets Local History Library.

The Frederick you mentioned I bump into quite alot. Now to your questions -

I know from the birth certificate that my Frederick was born Dec 1846 in Abingdon.

I know from the marriage certificate that my Frederick married Mary Ann Featherstone on the 13.4.1868 in the parish of St. Jude, Bethnal Green. Her father was John Featherstone, bricklayer. I found him on the 1881 census- he was born in 1821 at St.Lukes, Middlesex. I thought this was the Shoreditch parish because his wife was born in Shoreditch but I now think it's St.Lukes, Stepney. His wife was called Mary Ann(born 1821) and they had a daughter living with them, Sarah (born 1862).

Also, on the 1851 census for Bethnal Green, where Sarah was born, I found Featherstone, John (30), Mary(31) and Mary. I take that to be my Mary Ann.

Now, my Mary - on the 1901 census her birth place is Kent, Woolwich and she is 51. This links in with the 1851 census which states Kent to be her birthplace. But I cannot find her birth in Woolwich. There is a Mary Ann born Dec. 1848 in Greenwich and also a Mary Jane was born in Poplar in 1850 - I suspect the former but I'm not sure.

You mentioned the 1901 census only child on this census who would be on the 1881 census was Lydia, who was 24 at the time and Emily perhaps, she was 19. I suspect there were earlier children who had left home given the date of their marriage. They lived in the parish of St.Lukes.

Carla-Marie List (cazlist65@yahoo.co.uk) Hi, I have a John Featherstone who was born around 1825, but just a rough guide of the year and possibly born in Kent. The John Featherstone I have listed is the father of Mary Ann Featherstone b. 1848 in Woolwich, Kent. She was married to Frederick Fisher. Does that ring a bell? Look forward to hearing from you. Caz 26 February 2004

From: Caz 1965 [mailto:cazlist65@yahoo.co.uk] 26 May 2004
I went to the FRC and bought Mary Ann Featherstone's birth certificate. She was born on 29th September 1848 in Green Hill, Woolwich. Her father was John Featherstone. It says her mother's maiden name was Mary Ann Collier, not Carlier as what I was told. But I also got her sister Sarah's birth certificate born on 7th May 1862 (what an age gap) and her mother's maiden name was Carlier. I am confused. What do you think? Another problem is Mary Ann Featherstone was born in Woolwich while her siblings all back at Bethnal Green.
