Thomas William Featherstone & Ann Bristow

Hi Paul, I recently saw your name on a Rootsweb message board regarding the above, who are my great great grandparents (I think). Also coincidently Alphington is just 2 miles from me in Exeter although I am not a born and bred Devonian. My name is Robert James Featherstone and my father is Edward James - still going at 95 and the last of his generation. I should point out that I am very new to this and at the present have only very sketchy information about my ancestors. Please let me know if this is of interest to you or if you think you might have anything for me. Cheers Bob Featherstone Bobtravelclub@aol.com 10th June 2005

The 1861 census states James Featherstone was born Aston, Staffordshire, Aston is near to Stone and Milwich; this census was taken in Hackney Workhouse. The parents of James (above) were James Featherstone and Ellen Major; married at Nantwich, Cheshire on 9 Aug 1779, LDS microfilm Parish Register Nantwich; “James Featherstone, bricklayer and Ellen Major, both of this parish by banns”. They had 2 children Ann 1781 and Sarah 1783 at nearby Milwich Staffs. Per IGI and parish records there has been a Featherstone family in the Milwich/Eccleshall area for generations, presumably originating from the nearby village of Featherstone, near Birmingham. It must also be said of the parish records of that early time that many are illegible, which certainly occurs in patches in the Milwich and Stone registers.

I believe James went to Lambeth (Christchurch, Surrey ) as a child/young man because the 1851 census states that he came from Christchurch, Surrey. Their address in 1851 was 2 Tranquil Place, Hackney (Shacklewell area), he and his sons were bricklayers. John Featherstone, Bricklayer, was listed in the 1846 London directory at 1 Webber St, Blackfriars; also Featherstone and May, Bricklayers at the same address. This John was the son of Christopher Featherstone and Hannah nee Coggs. Hannah (age 68) was with John and wife Elizabeth in 1841 census Webber St. There appeared to be a Phillip Featherstone, bricklayer also in the area. I suspect that John and Philip were of the same family to James above; possibly Christopher, James senr and Philip were brothers. The name Philip is strong in the Staffs Featherstones

By 1815, James and Charlotte were in Spitalfields then St Luke, Westminster, Whitechapel, Bethnal Green and Hackney! In 1841 he was present at his son John’s marriage in Hackney because he signed his name as James Featherstonhough, a witness. Address given Morning Lane, Hackney, occupation of both was bricklayer. Son John Major Featherstonhough signed with an X. However, to add to the confusion in 1839 daughter Charlotte was married at St John, Hoxton using the name Featherstone and calling her father James Featherstone, his occupation bricklayer.

Charlotte Snr was born in Whitechapel in 1787/8, according to 1851 census and death certificate, parents unknown at this stage; she died on 1st February 1857 from “natural visitation of God”. They lived at 2 Nichols Row on the border of Bethnal Green and Shoreditch at the time. In 1851 son John (by now Featherstone although previously Featherstonhough) was living at 12 Nichols Row and his in-laws, Josiah Carlier and family, were also living there. After Charlotte died James went into the Hackney Workhouse, which I find very sad that with all those children and grandchildren around, none of them looked after him.

Children;

1.James Major Featherstonhough born 30 April 1810 in Lambeth ( also referred to as Christchurch, Surrey ). Baptised 24 September 1815 at Spitalfields, Stepney. He later became James Featherstone, occ bricklayer; he married Elizabeth from Edinburgh and had a daughter Elizabeth b 1832, who later married Alfred Radcliff; Alfred and Elizabeth lived in Watford. James and Elizabeth lived in Woolwich where he died 1891 2nd Qtr. My gt grandma ( niece of JMF ) and family lived fairly nearby at Camberwell. Oral history says they spent time with this family; possibly even going on a journey with them to Edinburgh to visit James’ wife’s family. My family would probably also have had a business motive for the trip.
2.Elizabeth Major Featherstonhough, bapt 24 September 1815 at Spitalfields. NOTE- Another Elizabeth Featherstonhough married Thomas Clarke 17 Dec 1849. She was daughter of John Featherstonhough, a carpenter; this Elizabeth was born 1825

    Children;

    3.John Major Featherstonhough b 1820 St Luke, died 1896 Mile End Old Town. He married Mary Ann Carlier 1841 in Hackney and later became John Featherstone; occ bricklayer. Children, John 1842 Charlotte 1844 Elizabeth 1845 Mary 1848 Lydia 1851 Susannah 1858 Sarah 1861. They lived in Bethnal Green, Woolwich and Mile End Old Town.
    4.Charlotte Featherstone 1823 – abt 1895 married Samuel Smith 21 April 1839 St John, Hoxton, my gt gt grandparents. See separate document.
    5.Mary Featherstone bapt at Whitechapel in May 1826
    And probably others !
