INQUEST AT HARTLEPOOL

mr j hyslop bell, coroner, held an inquest at the hartlepool police court yesterday, touching the death of john featherstone, 32 years of age, a plater's helper, living at 28 crimdon street, west hartlepool, whose death took place at hartlepools hospital on monday as a consequence of injuries received in an accident the same morning, at messrs furness, withy and co's shipyard. mr clarke, h.m. inspector of workshops and factories, was present during the proceedings. james lunney, foreman plater at furness, withy and co's ltd, living at 16 sea terrace, middleton, said he first received information of the accident on monday morning, about 9.10 o'clock. he went and saw where the accident had happened, and found it had occurred in the boiler room of a ship in course of construction. the work in hand at the time was the placing of a bulkhead in position, and the witness produced a plan showing there were two planks on the one side of the bulkhead, and one on
the other side - each about eight inches in width and three inches in thickness. the level at which these planks laid would be about 10 or 12 feet below the top of the casing, which was about four feet above the level of the deck, and about 26 to 29 feet above the tank top. the two planks were across a 16 feet 6 inches space. joseph mcguire, living at 1 ada street, west hartlepool, said on the day in question deceased was working as witnesses helper on the engine and boiler casing of the ship in question. they were engaged at the division which separated the stoke-hole from the boiler room, and had got three plates safely in their place bolted and fastened up, and were at the fourth, which was the last. this they had got heaved on to the tackle and raised as high as it had to be placed. they were on the after side of the bulkhead, where the two planks were, witness being on the main deck and deceased on the two planks. deceased was easing the lap of the
plate from the edge of the plate that was already up, when the suspended plate swayed and struck him on the right side, knocking him off the planks on to the tank top below. witness, in reply to the jury, stated that he walked across the planks several times himself and there was very little vibration. the foreman: "i can only say i would not walk on them". the inspector: "can you tell me who placed these planks in position?" witness: "yes sir, we did ourselves". the inspector: "is it the usual custom to do this yourselves?"
witness: "yes sir". in reply to the coroner, witness said that in all his 19 years connection with shipbuilding he had never known an accident like this happen; and he had been employed on this particular job in several yards in the country and all the while he had been at messrs furness, withy and co's. he had done the same thing as deceased did several times, and nothing had happened. asked what he would suggest in order that there might not be a recurrence of the accident, witness said that the use of a longer spanner to ease the plate would obviate the danger. john turnbull, plater, who was also engaged on the boiler casing at the time of the accident, also spoke to seeing the deceased knocked off the planks by the plate. elizabeth featherstone, widow of deceased, gave evidence of identification; and doctor mckee, house surgeon at the hospital, saaid deceased was brought to the institution in an unconscious condition, suffering from two lacerated
scalp wounds, a fracture of the vault of the skull, and a fracture of the left fore-arm. he never regained consciousness, and died about an hour after admission. the jury returned a verdict of "accidental death".6
He was enumerated as the son of Wilson Featherstone in the Census on 2 April 1871 Wilson Featherstone Occupation was a Potters Thrower living at 18 Newton Street, Stockton on Tees, Co Durham, EnglandG.7 John Featherstone was enumerated as the son of Wilson Featherstone in the Census on 3 April 1881 Wilson Featherstone Occupation was a Potter living at 19 Moss Street, Stockton on Tees, Co Durham, EnglandG.8 John Featherstone wasenumerated as a boarder in the Census on 5 April 1891 Head of House Sarah Dickson, John was a shipyard labourer living at 12 Arthur Steet, Stranton, West Hartlepool, Co Durham, EnglandG.9 John Featherstone was aged 32 at death as of June 1900.5

    INQUEST AT HARTLEPOOL

mr j hyslop bell, coroner, held an inquest at the hartlepool police court yesterday, touching the death of john featherstone, 32 years of age, a plater's helper, living at 28 crimdon street, west hartlepool, whose death took place at hartlepools hospital on monday as a consequence of injuries received in an accident the same morning, at messrs furness, withy and co's shipyard. mr clarke, h.m. inspector of workshops and factories, was present during the proceedings. james lunney, foreman plater at furness, withy and co's ltd, living at 16 sea terrace, middleton, said he first received information of the accident on monday morning, about 9.10 o'clock. he went and saw where the accident had happened, and found it had occurred in the boiler room of a ship in course of construction. the work in hand at the time was the placing of a bulkhead in position, and the witness produced a plan showing there were two planks on the one side of the bulkhead, and one on
the other side - each about eight inches in width and three inches in thickness. the level at which these planks laid would be about 10 or 12 feet below the top of the casing, which was about four feet above the level of the deck, and about 26 to 29 feet above the tank top. the two planks were across a 16 feet 6 inches space. joseph mcguire, living at 1 ada street, west hartlepool, said on the day in question deceased was working as witnesses helper on the engine and boiler casing of the ship in question. they were engaged at the division which separated the stoke-hole from the boiler room, and had got three plates safely in their place bolted and fastened up, and were at the fourth, which was the last. this they had got heaved on to the tackle and raised as high as it had to be placed. they were on the after side of the bulkhead, where the two planks were, witness being on the main deck and deceased on the two planks. deceased was easing the lap of the
plate from the edge of the plate that was already up, when the suspended plate swayed and struck him on the right side, knocking him off the planks on to the tank top below. witness, in reply to the jury, stated that he walked across the planks several times himself and there was very little vibration. the foreman: "i can only say i would not walk on them". the inspector: "can you tell me who placed these planks in position?" witness: "yes sir, we did ourselves". the inspector: "is it the usual custom to do this yourselves?"
witness: "yes sir". in reply to the coroner, witness said that in all his 19 years connection with shipbuilding he had never known an accident like this happen; and he had been employed on this particular job in several yards in the country and all the while he had been at messrs furness, withy and co's. he had done the same thing as deceased did several times, and nothing had happened. asked what he would suggest in order that there might not be a recurrence of the accident, witness said that the use of a longer spanner to ease the plate would obviate the danger. john turnbull, plater, who was also engaged on the boiler casing at the time of the accident, also spoke to seeing the deceased knocked off the planks by the plate. elizabeth featherstone, widow of deceased, gave evidence of identification; and doctor mckee, house surgeon at the hospital, saaid deceased was brought to the institution in an unconscious condition, suffering from two lacerated
scalp wounds, a fracture of the vault of the skull, and a fracture of the left fore-arm. he never regained consciousness, and died about an hour after admission. the jury returned a verdict of "accidental death".
