mrs featherstone, 193 stockton road, west hartlepool, has received news that her youngest son corporal e v featherstone, dorset regiment, has been missing since september 26th. lieutenant c j richards, writing to mrs featherstone, says, "i trust that he was captured, and is now safe and well. there is always hope. he was a very good soldier and a most promising n.c.o. when we were in the trenches together he was most energetic on patrol work, always cheerful, aleays ready to oblige". lieutenant and adjutant j g turner, writing to mrs featherstone, says: "we have been able to find nothing about your son. if we hear anything you will be informed at once. there is a chance that he may still be alive, but, i fear, not much. i knew your son well, and was very fond of him. there was not a more cheerful or loyal soldier in the battalion; he was always ready to do anything. my sorrow that he is missing is real, and i hope you will accept my real sympathy in your
trouble. he certainly did his duty nobly for his country, and i hope that thought may be some slight comfort to you". previous to enlisting e v featherstone was engaged on the clerical staff of the cerebos salt works, greatham, and before him a most promising career. he was on the wesleyan plan on trial at the outbreak of the war. he was fond of sport and of a very cheerful disposition. he was the youngest of his widowed mother.

LOCAL CASUALTIES

mrs j featherstone, 193 stockton road, west hartlepool, has received news from the infantry record office, exeter, intimating that no further news having been received relative to corporal ernest victor featherstone, of the dorset regiment, who has been missing since september 29, 1916, the army council have been regretfully constrained to conclude that he is dead. along with this official intimation was their majesties message of sympathy. corporal e v featherstone was the youngest son of mrs featherstone and joined the army in september, 1914. he was on active service for nearly two years serving in salonica, egypt, and the somme, where it is believed he met his death whilst leading a bombing squad into action. lieutenant and adjutant j g turner, in a letter to his mother, on october 30, 1916, said; "i knew your son well, and was very fond of him. there was not a more cheerful or loyal soldier in the battalion - he was alwys ready to do anything. my
sorrow that he is missing is real, and i hope you will accept my real sympathy in your trouble. he certainly did his duty nobly for his country, and i hope that thought may be some slight comfort to you". corporal e v featherstone was educated at branson's high school, osborne road, west hartlepool, and was for years a member of st paul's boys' brigade, and later of the institute. he was a keen footballer.
he won the three miles handicap race, and was awarded a silver cup while in military training at tidworth camp. previous to enlisting he was on the clerical staff of the cerebos salt works, greatham.4
     He was enumerated as the son of John Featherstone in the Census on 31 March 1901 John Featherstone Occupation was a Shop Keeper Boot And Shoe Dealer living at York Road South, West Hartlepool, Co Durham, EnglandG.2 Ernest Victor Featherstone was enumerated as the son of Jane Johnson in the Census on 2 April 1911 Jane Johnson Occupation was a Retired Boot Dealer, widow living at 18 Bell Street, West Hartlepool, Co Durham, EnglandG.5
